Can a hard drive be hooked up to a Dish network DVR?

It would seem that you should be able to, but wanted to see of anybody has done something like that and if so, how did if work.

How do I set up my vcr to tape programs shown through my Dish Network DVR?

My dvr is connected to the tv by an hdmi cable. I tried hooking my red, yellow and white cables to the vcr but when I try to tape anything all I get is a blue screen with audio but no picture — actually you can kind of see the image behind the blue but it appears to be floating upwards from the bottom right to the upper left. What am I doing wrong?
